§1Likely causes

  • Gas valve switch OFF, no voltage to gas valve, or debris in gas valve
  • Inlet gas pressure too high or below nameplate minimum
  • Low manifold pressure
  • Burner misalignment or dirty burners
  • Igniter position
  • Dirty flame sensor, poor grounding, sensor location or wire connections

§2Safe DIY steps

  1. Make sure other gas appliances in the home work, to confirm gas supply
  2. Make sure the gas valve switch is ON
  3. Technicianmeasure inlet and manifold gas pressure (manifold ~1.7" WC natural gas, ~6.0" WC LP)
  4. Techniciancheck igniter position, burners and flame current (typical 0.75-3.0 microamps)
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

§3When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician: if gas supply is confirmed and the lockout repeats.
